3 July 2016 v The Gemini

The untimely death of former Sunningdale Headmaster and Gemini founder Nick Dawson some weeks before gave this fixture a reflective atmosphere and a special resonance for all involved. An inserted Rambler line up started well on a damp deck, with Hugh Walters accumulating doggedly against some decent opening bowling including a huge straight six. He was ably supported in this by guest E Kneale and H Cary at the top of the order. Following his demise on 43, there followed 3 quick middle order wickets, but the innings was steadied commendably by H. Neal and another guest C Sykes who fought doggedly either side of lunch and gradually propelled the innings up towards a final total of 196 all out. Gemini’s reply was muted at first thanks to some miserly opening bowling from Cary and Kneale, although neither received much support from their captain at slip. Thereafter, however, the spinners took control. The angelic F Fox was largely unplayable and created significant pressure in combination with another off spinner, yet another guest,  Groome. Between them they accounted for 7 Gemini wickets at regular intervals. The somewhat alarming arrival of the Gemini no 11, who opened his account with an immaculate reverse sweep for 4, could not prevent a Rambler victory, as his partner succumbed to a Fox quicker ball and the Ramblers enjoyed their first victory for some years in this fixture, by 69 runs
